Español: La oficina

El pasado martes la oficina de es-artes abrió de nuevo después de la Semana Santa y oficialmente tengo un lugar para trabajar. El lugar es una casa típica colonial con cuartos a los lados y patio en el centro. Algo prominente de esta casa es un enorme árbol de mango en medio del patio. La semana pasada había comprado mangos en el mercado local, pero creo que de ahora en adelante no voy a necesitar hacer eso. Sólo tengo que esperar a que alguno de los mangos esté maduro y tomarlo del árbol directamente.

Hay tres personas trabajando permanentemente en la oficina: Tatiana, quien maneja la oficina y lidera el programa de teatro; Evelyn, quien trata los aspectos administrativos; y Tito, quien se encarga de aspectos técnicos y hace trabajo creativo. Hay muchos otros que trabajan para los proyectos según se requiera.

Mi oficina fue acondicionada ayer; es un cuarto agradable con vista al árbol de mango, puerta y ventana con vidrios coloreados, y baño privado! La brisa en la tarde me hace sentir que estoy en el lugar correcto. Las horas de trabajo son de 8:30 am a 5:00 pm, sin embargo, esto es nominal pues el grupo trabaja por proyectos y las horas de trabajo pueden ser muchas más cuando el proyecto lo requiere. Con respecto a mis horas de trabajo, la verdad no tengo. Mi tarea es entrevistar gente y conseguir información, así que necesito estar donde la gente está y a la hora en que estén disponibles. Mi tiempo de oficina es para poner por escrito la información recibida o, como fue al caso esta semana, para escribir el plan de trabajo y el presupuesto.

English: The office

Last Tuesday es-artes office reopened after the Holy Week and now I officially have a place to work. The place is a typical colonial house with rooms on the sides and a patio in the centre. The landmark of this one is a huge mango tree in the middle of the patio. Last week I had bought some mangoes at the local market, but I think from now on I will not need to do that anymore. I just need to wait for one to be mature enough and pick it directly from the tree.

There are three people working permanently in this office: Tatiana, who manages the office and leads the theatre program; Evelyn, who deals with administrative issues; and Tito, who deals with technical issues and also does creative work. There are many others that work for the projects and come and go as required.

My office was set up on Wednesday; it is a nice room with view to the mango tree, door and window with coloured glass, and private bathroom! The breeze in the afternoon makes me feel I am at the right place. Regular working hours are from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, however, this is just nominal as the group works in projects and working hours may be much longer when the project requires it. As per my working hours, I really do not have. My job is interviewing people and gathering information so I need to go where the people are at the time they are available. Office time is for writing down the information received or, as it happened this week, writing my work plan and budget.

Español: La Semana Santa

Junto con la Navidad, la Semana Santa es una de las más importantes celebra- ciones del mundo católico. El Salvador no es la excepción mucha gente viaja con sus familias para evitar la multitud, otros viajan para ser parte de la multitud. Como ciudad turística, Suchitoto recibe muchos visitantes durante esta semana que comienza en Domingo de Ramos en el que la gente recuerda la entrada de Jesús a Jerusalén, el jueves es la Última Cena, el viernes es la muerte de Jesús, y el domingo es la resurrección.

En Suchitoto, al igual que en otras partes de Centro América, existe la tradición de preparar alfombras hechas de aserrín y sal pintados de colores. En tan solo unas horas, gente de diferentes barrios crea unas hermosas obras de arte en la calle y luego una procesión pasa sobre ellas. Esto sucede el Viernes Santo.

English: The Holy Week

Along with Christmas, the Holy Week is one of the most important celebrations in the catholic world. El Salvador in not an exception of this; many people travel with their families to avoid the crowds, other travel to be part of the crowd. As a touristic town, Suchitoto receives many visitors during this week that starts with the Palm Sunday when people remember the entrance of Jesus to Jerusalem; Thursday is the Last Supper; Friday is the death of Jesus; and Sunday is the resurrection.

In Suchitoto, as in other parts of Central America, there is a tradition of preparing carpets made of dyed salt and sawdust. In just a few hours, people from different neighborhoods create beautiful pieces of art on the street and later a procession passes on top of them. This happens in the Good Friday.

Español: Mirando al futuro

Suchitoto es un municipio que se ha convertido en pionero en muchos aspectos de la vida en El Salvador. 90% de la población tiene acceso a agua potable y, según la gente del pueblo, es la única ciudad del país donde se puede tomar agua de la llave. Yo he tomado jugos con hielo hechos con agua fresca y hasta ahora no he tenido problemas. La ciudad tiene un programa de reciclaje donde los materiales orgánicos, los plásticos y el vidrio y metal son recolectados en diferentes contenedores y recogidos por trabajadores de la ciudad en diferentes días. Los compuestos orgánicos son enviados a compostaje y el compost es vendido como abono a los agricultores. En este momento no conozco el proceso de los otros dos materiales, pero pienso ir a planta de tratamiento de reciclaje entonces reportaré luego.

Hay también una estrategia de desarrollo económico basado en género. Un grupo de concertación de mujeres está trabajando en temas de violencia, derechos sexuales, autonomía económica y participación. Y basado en lo que he oído y visto, la gente de las áreas rurales tiene una fuerte participación en la toma de decisiones del pueblo.

Suchitoto es una atracción turística no solo por sus calles, sus montañas y su encanto de pueblo pequeño, sino también por su gente y la forma en que miran al futuro.

English: Looking at the future

Suchitoto is a municipality that has become a pioneer in many aspect of life in El Salvador. 90% of the population has access to clean water and, according to local people, it is the only city where one can drink water directly from the pipe. I have drunk fresh juices with ice cubes made with tap water, and so far I have not had any issues. The city has a recycling system where organic materials, plastics, and glass and metals are collected in different bins and picked up by city workers in different days. Organic materials are composted and sold to farmers. At this point I do not know what the process is for the other two materials, but visiting the recycling facility is in my to-do list, so I will report that later.

There is also a strategy for economic development focused on gender. A committee for women issues is working on gender violence, sexual rights, economic autonomy, and participation. And based on what I have heard and seen, people from rural areas seem to have a strong participation in town’s decision making.

Suchitoto is a touristic attraction not only because of its roads, its mountains, and its small-town charm, but also for its people and the way they look at the future.
