Español: Clase de química

Tatiana, la Directora Ejecutiva de Es Artes me propuso dar una clase de química a los estudiantes de la Escuela Taller de Artes y Oficios Tradicionales. Acepté preparar una especie de taller interactivo para dar a los estudiantes un repaso de los productos químicos, su origen y su uso, enfatizando en los productos que ellos van a usar en su entrenamiento diario.

Pasé algunas de mis noches refrescando mi memoria y organizado conceptos. Me pidieron hacer una sesión más bien interactiva con experimentos que soportaran la teoría, entonces necesité buscar algunas demostraciones químicas fáciles de hacer utilizando materiales simples. La búsqueda me llevó a algunas páginas en internet que fueron muy útiles. Llegué a una propuesta de taller de cuatro horas que fue aceptada, ellos encontraron los materiales que pedí y realicé el taller el jueves en la mañana.

Fue una linda experiencia tener la oportunidad de compartir con este grupo de cuarenta y tantos jóvenes. El taller salió bien aunque calculé mal el tiempo de una de las actividades y eso me desordenó un poco en el manejo del tiempo. Pero me siento feliz con el resultado final. Aprendí mucho y creo que los estudiantes se interesaron, participaron, y aprendieron algo también.

English: Chemistry class

Tatiana, the Executive Director of Es Artes proposed me to give a chemistry class to the students of the School of Arts and Traditional Trades. I accepted to prepare a sort of hands-on workshop to give the students an overview of chemical products, their origin and their use, emphasizing on products that they will use in their day-to-day training.

I spent part of my evenings to refresh my memory and organize concepts. Also, they asked me to do a rather interactive session with experiments that support the theory, so I needed to search some easy-to-do chemical demonstrations using simple materials. The research got me to some on-line resources that were very helpful. I came up with a four-hour workshop proposal that was accepted, they found the materials I asked, and I delivered the workshop Thursday morning.

It was nice experience to have the opportunity to share with this group of forty-something young men and women. The workshop went well although I miscalculated the time of one of the dynamics and that messed up a little bit my time. But I feel happy with the end result. I learned a lot; and I think the students were interested, they participated, and they learned something too.

Español: Semanas agitadas

Las últimas tres semanas han estado bastante cargadas. Primero, comencemos con mi oficina, hace algunas semanas la casa Es Artes tuvo un día de mudanza porque necesitaban el cuarto principal para las clases de teatro. El cuarto estaba siendo utilizado como bodega para los vestidos, herramientas y accesorios de la presentación del 27 de Marzo. Todos esos materiales tuvieron que ser relocalizados en otros cuartos, y el espacio era escaso. Yo contribuí con el proceso de mudanza moviendo algunas de las cajas y también cediendo el espacio que tenía como oficina (ver la foto en el menasje en inglés) para que sirviera de bodega adicional. Estoy de vuelta a la oficina frontal la cual tiene tres escritorios que son compartidos entre seis personas. La gente aquí es suficientemente creativa e improvisan escritorios adicionales de acuerdo a las necesidades del día.

En segundo lugar, la semana pasada tuve un viaje de tres días a San Salvador para visitar algunas organizaciones y oficinas del gobierno que tiene información valiosa para mi proyecto. Tuve siete entrevistas en tres días y fue un viaje muy productivo. Fue un desafío lograr las citas en días consecutivos y organizar la agenda en una manera más o menos lógica. Me tomó dos semanas para organizar todas esas reuniones ya que algunas personas no respondían a tiempo, otros cambiaron las fechas, y otros no estaban disponibles. Me siento contento con los resultados pues solo me faltó una persona por visitar.

Y tercero, Jacques, mi contacto en Costa Rica se muda de nuevo a Canadá. Esto generó una visita de Rolando, el director de la oficina de costa rica para revisar el proyecto Es Artes y también para reunirse con las personas que trabajan en los diferentes proyectos, incluido el mío. Yo supe de la visita una semana antes entonces me preparé con alguna información sobre mi avance, pero el día anterior a la visita me dijeron que tuviera una lista de ideas de trabajo con la diáspora. Tenía alguna información pero yo esperaba presentar eso al final del proyecto ya que ese es la última etapa. En una noche tuve que organizar toda la información disponible en la mejor forma posible. Llegué con un documento de tres páginas que afortunadamente fue bien recibido por Rolando y las personas que lo leyeron.

Esta semana estoy en otra carrera ya que mis contactos en Canadá y Costa Rica quieren ver un borrador del reporte final antes de que Jacques se vaya para poder tener su retroalimentación. Es algo bueno porque escribir el reporte final es algo que toma tiempo. Tener algo ahora y tener retroalimentación me da insumos para organizar mejor las ideas y conclusiones.

English: Crazy weeks

The last three weeks have been very busy ones. First, let’s start with my office, some weeks ago the Es Artes House had a cleaning-moving day as they needed the main room to give the theatre classes. The room was the storage place for all the clothing, tools, and props that were used during the preparation of the performance of March 27th. All those materials had to be relocated in other rooms, and there was lack of space. I contributed with the process by helping moving some of the boxes and also by giving up the space I had as an office (in the picture) to be an additional storage room. I am back to the front office which has three desks that are shared with six people. People here are creative enough so that some additional desks are improvised according to the needs of the day.

Second, last week I have a three-day trip to San Salvador to visit some organizations and government offices that have valuable information for my project. I had seven interviews in three days and it was a very productive trip. It was also a challenge to get those appointments in consecutive days and organize a more or less logic agenda. It took me two weeks to organize all those meetings as some people did not respond on time, others changed dates, and others were not available. I feel happy with the results though, because I missed only one person to visit.

And third, Jacques, my contact in Costa Rica is moving back to Canada. That triggered a visit of Rolando, the manager of the Costa Rican Office to have a view of the Es Artes project and also to have a meeting with the people working in different projects, mine included. I knew about the visit one week before so I was prepared with some information about my progress, but the day before the visit I was told to have a list of ideas to work with the diaspora. Some information was there but I expected to present it at the very end of the project as that is the final step. In one night I had to organize all the information available in the best way possible. I arrived with a three-page document that fortunately was well received by Rolando and the people who read it.

This week I am in another rush, as mi contacts in Canada and Costa Rica want to see a draft of the final report this week before Jacques leaves so I can have his feedback. It is good though because writing the final report is something that takes time. Having something now and having feedback now gives me inputs to organize better the ideas and conclusions.

Español: Lluvias de El Salvador

Ha pasado algún tiempo sin que escriba aquí. He estado bastante ocupado los días anteriores tratando de obtener información de internet, organizando una base de datos de organizaciones de la diáspora, y organizando mis propias ideas. La información que he recibido en las entrevistas que he hecho es tan inmensa que en muchos casos no es fácil de resumir. Cada organización es tan única, y cada experiencia tiene tantas facetas que algunas veces mi mente se siente desbordada de datos. Supongo que este es el desafío… ser capaz de decodificar toda esa información y ponerla en blanco y negro para que los usuarios finales la puedan usar realmente y obtener algo de ella.

Es como el clima de hoy en Suchitoto: comenzó con una lluvia agradable en la mañana, luego dejó de llover y el día comenzó a aclarar, pero luego la lluvia regresó más fuerte… y duró toda la tarde. En la noche se tornó en tormenta eléctrica con relámpagos que hicieron temblar las ventanas. Este proyecto puede ser una mímica de eso: alguna información al principio, luego tranquilo, y luego una sobrecarga de datos, contactos y hechos que nunca paran. Al final será como una tormenta de información. Solo espero que todo termine igual que se va terminando esta noche… los truenos se terminaron, ya no está lloviendo, y yo estoy acomodándome tranquilamente para tomar mi descanso diario. English: Rains of El Salvador

It has been a while without writing here. The last few days I have been very busy trying to get information from the internet, organizing a database of diaspora organizations, and organizing my own ideas. The information have received in the interviews I had done is so immense that in many cases is not easy to summarize. Every organization is so unique, and every experience has so many faces that sometimes my mind feels overwhelmed with data. I guess that is the challenge… being able to decode all that information and put it in black and white so the final users can really use it and get something good from it.

It’s like today’s weather in Suchitoto: it started raining nicely in the morning, then stopped and the day started to get clear, but later the rain came back again and this time stronger… and it lasted the whole afternoon. In the evening it became a thunderstorm with lightning that caused windows to shake. This project may be a mimic of that: some information to begin, and then quiet, and then an overload of data, contacts, and facts that don’t stop. At the end it will be like a storm of information. I just hope that everything ends like this night is ending right now… lightning is gone, it is not raining anymore, and I am settling down peacefully into my daily rest. Good night.
